The project I initiated, produced, and managed set out to explore the sensual language of the human body and its response to intense emotional states. The final work grew from a close collaboration with ballet dancers and performers whom I invited to help examine and capture the interplay between physical and spiritual expression.
After months spent observing and analyzing human behavior, reactions, and the often-unspoken ways we communicate emotion, I felt compelled to create a new photographic series that reveals the silent dialogue between the body and the mind.
My role was to form an emotional connection with each sitter - to recognize and interpret the feelings they carried by reading their body language and their uniquely personal forms of expression. This process allowed me to witness different stages of mental and emotional conditions, and to understand how inner states manifest in outward presence - how we are perceived, and how we present ourselves to the world.
For this to be possible, every performer involved needed a clear understanding of the analytical nature of the project. They had to be fully engaged, grounded in their own emotional truth, and willing to let those feelings emerge naturally through movement and posture.
The human body reveals everything. Posture, gesture, and facial expression disclose both physical and psychological states of being. Joy and sorrow, strength and fragility - all can be seen, if one pays attention.
Passion / Desire / Excitement / Happiness / Exhilaration / Pride / Loneliness / Apathy / Hopelessness / Tiredness
My aim was to explore this full spectrum of emotion and to document a deeply intimate collaboration - not only between body and mind within each performer, but also between the performers as expressive subjects and myself as an attentive observer.
